Hanging with Rosie

Last week I heard that Rosie and the "ladies" at The View were going to be discussing Women & Depression on Friday's show. I haven't watched the View since its first season because quite frankly, listening to a group of women having a hen party wasn't my idea of entertainment. I did like Meredith Viera but Star Jones seriously bugged and Joy is a funny stand up comic but I don't like her schtick in a small group setting. And needless to say the whole Rosie O'Donnell brouhaha bored me.

That said, the idea of a very popular women's talk show taking on the topic of depression and looking at different personal experiences and treatments intrigued me. The only dilemma I had then was that if I stayed home to watch it I'd be late for Friday Knitting! So I did what any modern person would do, I set the dvr on my cable box and went to knitting!

However I've been really busy/tired since last Friday so I hadn't had a chance to sit down and watch it until this morning. I was prepared to be a little annoyed, react somewhat snarky, and perhaps even get a bit pissed off if need be. But I'm glad to say I wasn't. They seemed to really present a fair representation of what having this disease is like for many woman. They made a point to say that it isn't something that should be covered up in shame. Alternative treatments and a discussion of the different types of depression and their symptoms were covered. I was afraid Rosie was going to make it all about her experience and hog the spotlight but she kept it in check for the most part.

So overall I give it a thumbs up, for nothing more than presenting this issue in a manner that brings it out of the dark corners and sheds some much needed light on it. I applaud them for repeatedly making the point that having depression isn't something to be ashamed of or embarrassed about. It is what it is and dealing with it and getting help is a positive thing.
