I'm Mrs Hot Flashes
I'm Mrs Sun
I'm Mrs Heat Blister
I'm Mrs Hundred and One
They call me Heat Mistress,
What ever I touch
Starts to melt in my clutch
I'm too much!
[Chorus]
She's Mrs Hot Flashes
She's Mrs Sun
She's Mrs Heat Blister
She's Mrs Hundred and One
[Heat Miser]
They call me Heat Mistress,
What ever I touch
Starts to melt in my clutch
[Chorus]
She's too much!
[Heat Miser]
Thank you!
I never want to see a day
That's under sixty degrees
I'd rather have it eighty,
Ninety, one hundred degrees!
(spoken):Oh, some like it hot, but I like it really hot! Hee hee!
[Chorus]
She's Mrs Hot Flashes
She's Mrs Sun
[Heat Miser]
Sing it!
[Chorus]
She's Mrs Heat Blister
She's Mrs Hundred and One
[Heat Miser]
They call me Heat Mistress,
What ever I touch
Starts to melt in my clutch
I'm too much!
[All]
Too Much!
"Consumed by the Flames of Menopause"
by Beth Oberle, 2007
At Friday Knitting a week ago a project was brought up where the Peeps at Wool & Company are having friends/customers/run-of-the-mill stalkers, create art dolls from various fibers, using various techniques, to auction off for charity on their website. I took home a little bag of fibery goodness and looked forward to diving back into the art doll world I had left a while ago.
When I sat down in my new room to come up with something I kept going back to a classic Goddess figure. But I knew that "Mary B., fiber artist" had already created a phenomenal "Venus of Willendorf" inspired doll, dubbed "Fanny" and I didn't want to compete with her brilliance. I didn't really have the time or resources this week to crack out the sewing machine and traditional art doll methods so I did decide to go ahead with a needle felted figure. As I looked through my small stash of dyed roving I kept being drawn to the flame orange, gold and reds, not my typical color palette.
So, in honor of my officially becoming a crone (a year ago I had my hysterectomy and Monday I turn 40), I made an art doll as an homage to the joy of menopause.
We are big Rankin/Bass fans here in the Mess/Snark household, Heat Miser from The Year Without a Santa Claus is probably our all time favorite character. As soon as I Googled the lyrics to his theme song every member of the family, yes even the four legged members I think, was singing this song. My apologies to Messrs. Rankin & Bass for bastardizing their song.
I. Want. One. That's awesome!
ReplyDeleteI love your Hot Flash doll...it's so much better than what I dreamt I'd make :)
ReplyDeleteBeth, she is FLAMIN' AMAZING.
ReplyDeleteRandom Wool & Co. customers stand in awe of her. I didn't know you had a dollmaking background - but I'm not surprised, given how cool Ms. Menopause is.
Many years ago (before kids) we went on a biking trip through Germany and Austria, on a route which took us through Willendorf. Back a few odd roads, pretty much in someone's backyard, there's a *huge* statue of the Venus herself. Turns out the original figure would fit easily in the palm of your hand. I love Mary's version as well, but yours is...well. It's on fire.
